Vanitas and the Urgency of Life

I happened to notice a small bunny sitting by the side of the road while jogging. I found it unusual that the bunny didn’t run away as I approached, so I stopped to examine him.  Next to the nervous animal was another bunny, this one dead, clearly hit by a car.  I tried to get the living bunny to leave his friend, but he would not. When I came jogging back, some 30 minutes later, he was still there.   Much later in the evening I went back out, to check on the living bunny.  He was not there.  I looked around, trying to find his body, to see if he had been hit, but I only found the one body.  I took comfort, and hoped that he had lived.  As I was getting back to my apartment, two young bunnies ran across my path.  I think that was a good sign.
